Film says hi-yo to Silver City

From the Silver City News Sun-News:

Film says hi-yo to Silver City

SILVER CITY - Silver City residents are about to get a shot at their 15 minutes of fame.

Elizabeth Gabel, an extras casting director, has put out the call for extras for a major, big-budget Hollywood film being shot in the Silver City area in October. On her website, egcasting.com, the production is called "Silver Bullet," but Daniel Taras, owner of Crew New Mexico, an Albuquerque-based company that works with casting directors and helps connect New Mexico businesses with the film industry, said when films send out a casting call they usually use coded words.

"It provides some cover of privacy for the film," he said, "but it's usually not so abstract that you can't figure it out."

Other sources have reported that the film "Silver Bullet," is actually "The Lone Ranger," starring Johnny Depp and other high-profile actors, but Gabel wasn't saying.

"I cannot confirm that," she said Thursday. "I signed a nondisclosure agreement that states I can't reveal the name of the project, the studio, or the main actors."

But what Gabel could say was that the film is a western and is going to be a lot of fun to be involved with. She will be looking for 300 to 500 extras for the Silver City portion of the shoot, which is slated to begin in October and will run for about six weeks.

"This is a show that people are going to want to come to audition for," she said...

Cabinet Secretary-designate Jon Barela Announces NBC Entertainment Filming Television Pilot Entitled "Reconstruction" in New Mexico

SANTA FE - Economic Development Department Cabinet Secretary-designate Jon Barela announced today that "Reconstruction," a television pilot produced by Universal Media Studios for NBC Entertainment, began filming in New Mexico Monday, March 21. Locations in and around the state are being used to represent post Civil War Missouri including Sena, Buena Vista, La Cienega, Galisteo, Chama and an area near Espanola.

The production will employ at least 125 New Mexico crew members and over 150 principal and background talent during the three weeks of filming. Open casting calls for background talent were held in Santa Fe and in Chama.

"Reconstruction" takes place during the aftermath of the Civil War and revolves around a soldier that crosses the country and settles into a complicated Missouri border town where he is welcomed as its savior – whether he likes it or not.  The show stars Martin Henderson ("Off The Map"), Rachelle Lefevre ("Twilight," "Off The Map"), Claire Wellin ("Detroit 1-8-7"), Bill Sage ("Precious," "Nurse Jackie"), Emma Bell ("The Walking Dead"), Coburn Goss ("The Chicago Code"), Robert Knepper ("Prison Break") and Billy Brown ("Lights Out").

The production is executive produced and directed by Peter Horton ("Grey's Anatomy") along with writer and executive producer Joshua Brand ("Northern Exposure") and executive producer Aaron Kaplan. Anne Johns will serve as unit production manager, and Steve Saeta will line produce.

"Speaking on behalf of the staff and management of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, we are thrilled to be part of NBC's pilot, 'Reconstruction.'  This is a very exciting launch to the all new Cumbres and Toltec 2011 Season," said Nick Quintana, C&TSRR Spokesman. "We consider the upcoming year our comeback, better than ever, especially after last year's fire damaged Lobato Trestle, a major setback.  This is certainly a boost for the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and also for the communities."

Do you have a great script you want to develop? Are you ready to take the next step on your career as a screenwriter? ANYONE CAN APPLY to participate in NALIP's inspiring, creative 10-day Latino Writers Lab program. This is for ALL WRITERS – not just Latino writers!  Presented by HBO, this is a professional development intensive that will alter your writing process, inspire your current project, and nurture your unique voice as you develop a new feature screenplay.

Now in its ninth year, the Writers Lab offers top-level skills development as well as specific, one-on-one mentoring for your work-in-progress. It includes intimate professional lunches that provide you with invaluable information and important relationships for your career. This is not a program for beginning writers: you must have at least one complete screenplay under your belt, and hopefully additional skills study. But it is a great program to develop a treatment into a first draft, or a rough draft into something you can promote or sell.   The program is taught in two parts: the first session takes place in Santa Fe, New Mexico, May 18 - 22. With the techniques and specific notes you will receive, we know that you will have great tools and ideas to rewrite your screenplay over the summer.  The second session meets in Santa Monica, CA September 21-25, where the program will discuss scene structure and rewriting strategies using your own work, plus give you a new set of notes on your draft. The Latino Writers Lab application is available online here. The deadline is this Wednesday, March 25. Email your completed application to: LWL2011@nalip.org.  Call Carlos or Octavio with questions: 310-395-8880. Visit the Latino Writers Lab page for more details!

Governor Bill Richardson and Marvel Studios Announce Largest Movie Production in New Mexico History

Marvel Studios will shoot ensemble comic book Super Hero film

  THE AVENGERS in New Mexico

SANTA FE, NM—Governor Bill Richardson and Marvel Studios' Co-President Louis D'Esposito announced that Marvel Studios will film the comic book Super Hero adventure film THE AVENGERS  primarily in New Mexico. The production will be the largest feature film ever made in the state as well as the largest Marvel production to date.  The film is estimated to employ hundreds of New Mexican based cast and crew, and use hundreds of local service and supply vendors.   Pre-production is already underway, with principal photography scheduled to start in April 2011 and running through September, 2011.

"In addition to being our biggest production to date, THE AVENGERS will be the most technologically advanced and will provide cutting-edge training opportunities for our crew," said Richardson.  "I'm announcing this as a Christmas present of sorts to the people of New Mexico.  This is a perfect example of the incredible job creation, economic impact and global visibility this industry has brought our state over the past eight years, and of the need to keep it moving forward."

"We are incredibly excited to be returning to New Mexico with THE AVENGERS.  We had a terrific experience shooting portions of THOR in the Land of Enchantment and we are looking forward to making New Mexico even more of a home on our next production.  THE AVENGERS is our biggest film to date and New Mexico is the right place for us to shoot the film," said Louis D'Esposito, Co-President, Marvel Studios.

"We welcome THE AVENGERS to Albuquerque and look forward to hosting Marvel Studios over the coming year," said Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry. "Clearly, Albuquerque remains a premiere city in the U.S. for production."

The production will occupy the available stages at Albuquerque Studios for the better part of a year in addition to considerable location work in regions still to be announced.  Parts of the film will also be shot in New York and Michigan.

In May 2012, Earth's Mightiest Heroes unite for the Super Hero team up of a lifetime. Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America and Thor assemble in the spectacular summer film event "Marvel Studios' THE AVENGERS," starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Clark Gregg and Samuel L. Jackson. Marvel Studios' THE AVENGERS is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series The Avengers, first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since.

Joss Whedon is set to write and direct THE AVENGERS.  Kevin Feige is the Producer alongside Executive Producers Jon Favreau, Louis D'Esposito, Alan Fine, Stan Lee and Patty Whitcher and Co-Producers Jeremy Latcham and Victoria Alonso.

A New Mexico connection to Marvel Super Heroes was first glimpsed in the plot of IRON MAN 2, when Thor's hammer was believed to have been discovered in the state.  Marvel also filmed a large portion of the feature film THOR in New Mexico earlier this year. THOR is scheduled to be released in May, 2011.

Since Governor Richardson took office in 2003, more than 150 major film and television productions have been made in New Mexico, with an estimated economic impact of almost $4 billion.  There are 10,000 direct and indirect film-related jobs in the state, and more than 250 businesses and services directly related to the industry, with thousands more providing support goods and services.
