Las Cruces Film Liaison Gears Up

By S. Derrickson Moore Sun-News reporter

LAS CRUCES —If new Las Cruces film liaison Crystal Downs discovers that producers want to make an epic disaster movie here, she'll be uniquely qualified to help them out.

Downs comes to her new post after four years with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and said the skills that helped her organize teams during floods and hurricanes are applicable to her new job.

"You fly to an area and arrange hotel and rental vehicles and other resources for a team of 50 people. It's just like setting up for a film," said Downs, who arranged on-site team resources for several natural disasters, including Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Wilma, tornadoes in Kansas, floods in South Dakota and Rockford, Ill., and a major snowstorm near Denver.

The city of Las Cruces, Doña Ana County, Mesilla and Creative Media Institute at New Mexico State University joined forces to establish the new film liaison position and office. Initial funding includes $25,000 each from the city and county with an office and other benefits contributed from CMI, said CMI director Jonathan Benson.
