SHORT ANIMATION COMPETITION

and make your short animation idea become a reality

Two winning shorts will be produced in
New Mexico in 2008


The Governor’s Cup Short Animation Competition recognizes local New Mexico talent and encourages and supports our filmmakers of the future. This competition will provide an avenue for up-and-coming, as well as seasoned, New Mexico filmmakers to compete for the opportunity to create a short (less than 10 minute) animated film. With support from the National Geographic All Roads Film Project and Pangea, the Competition is soliciting entries from all corners of the state of New Mexico.

Two winning ideas will be produced with the assistance of mentors from the University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, Pangea Pictures, and IATSE 480. Software and computer workstations will also be available.

Short animation (less than 10 minutes) – one winner
A selection team of professional animators will choose one winning short animation idea. The selected project will be provided a budget of $10,000 toward production costs.

National Geographic All Roads Film Project:
Indigenous or Minority Culture short animation (less than 10 minutes) – one winner

This category is open to indigenous and under-represented minority filmmakers, as well as filmmakers who can demonstrate that they have been designated by indigenous or minority communities to tell their story. National Geographic will provide a budget of $10,000 toward production costs.

Materials to be submitted include:

  • General Synopsis – Limited to 3 pages, the synopsis should describe the story, stylistic approach, the animation technique (3D or 2D cgi, hand-drawn or stop motion for example) and a short bio of the individual or team.
  • PLEASE INCLUDE A FULL SCRIPT (double-sided). This is in addition to the 3-page general synopsis of the program
  • Storyboards to illustrate your approach to the material
  • At least ONE (1) full color character and set design
  • If applicable, please include any animated work already completed or in progress.

DEADLINE: APRIL 16, 2008
Applications must be received at the NM Film Office by 5pm. This is not a postmark deadline.
