Apr. 19--LAS CRUCES -- Hollywood on the Rio Grande, or Tamalewood, as some wags are dubbing New Mexico's growing role as a film mecca, may also be vying for a role as the Sundance of the desert.

For its fifth edition, the burgeoning White Sands International Film Festival is moving to Las Cruces. Here the event is expected to attract film fans from throughout the world with an innovative roster that will include films, panels and special events Thursday through April 26.

The indy film fest became so successful that it has outgrown Alamogordo and is expanding to local venues that include the new Allen Theatres Cineport 10, Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces and New Mexico State University.

"This year, WSIFF will screen over 45 independent documentary and narrative films at the new Cineport 10 and will conduct a series of informative and exciting panels led by industry experts. Weekend events will include an opening night bash on Thursday at the St. Clair Winery, 1800 Avenida de Mesilla in Mesilla, and after parties at the Azul Nightclub at Hotel Encanto on Friday and Saturday nights, April 24 and 25," said WSIFF festival director Kierstin Schupack.

The festival is attracting a diverse range of films and talents...
